What’s in a name?

April 12, 2011

Last week Thames Valley University (TVU) was publicly rebranded as the University of West London (use of the abbreviation UWL is deprecated, except in URLs and email addresses).

So our Blackboard VLE, formerly TVU Online, has now been rebranded as West London Online, and can be found at http://online.uwl.ac.uk while the Help site is now located at www.uwl.ac.uk/blackboard or www.uwl.ac.uk/westlondononline

And of course I couldn’t really carry on labelling this blog “TVU e-Learning”. Since my job title changed some months ago to Technology Enhanced Learning Manager, I thought it was probably time to ditch the e-Learning bit as well.

So welcome to West London Online – the TEL Blog, with a new URL, https://westlondononline.wordpress.com
It’s a bit of a mouthful, and to be honest I’m hoping that inspiration will strike before too long, and I’ll think of a snappy new name… or maybe I’ll just get used to it.

Personally I don’t like to get too hung up on names. Wikipedia says “Technology enhanced learning (or TEL) refers to the support of any learning activity through technology” and that’s a satisfyingly broad definition. But Wikipedia also says that “E-learning comprises all forms of electronically supported learning and teaching”, and I’d be equally happy working with that in my job description.
