Changes to the way you log on to Blackboard

August 30, 2012

The Single Sign On project aims to simplify the way students and staff log on to University IT systems, and we took a big step towards this goal at the start of this week.

Students:

Blackboard login screenFrom Tuesday 28 August students no longer have to remember a separate password for Blackboard. From now on they are able to log on to Blackboardwith the same username and password that they use to access their University email. This is also the same password students use to log on to computers in the University Library, PebblePad, and Library e-resources.

Students can no longer change their password via Blackboard (in fact students should no longer see the “Change Password” option in Blackboard). There will be a facility to reset their University IT password – details to follow.

In the meantime, all password queries should be raised with the IT Service Desk.

Staff:

The situation is less clear cut, because there have been various conventions used over the years when setting up staff Blackboard accounts. But change will already have come for some staff, and is coming very soon for everyone else. For those of you who are not too keen on change: it should be fairly painless, and the end result is that you will no longer have to remember a separate username and password for Blackboard.

Staff fall into one of three categories:

1. If you already log on to Blackboard with your Active Directory (AD) username

i.e. if your username for Blackboard and Staff Webmail are already exactly the same (typically your AD username would be in the format blogfre or bloggsf)

From Tuesday 28 August you no longer have to remember a separate password for Blackboard. From that date, you should be able to log on to Blackboard with the same username and password that you use to access your University email. There will be no other changes to your Blackboard account – you will still see exactly the same courses, communities etc. and have exactly the same roles and permissions.

2. If you currently log on to Blackboard with your staff payroll number

i.e. the ID number printed on your staff card

Initially you will continue to log on just as you have been doing. However, within a few weeks we will set up a new Blackboard account for you, allowing you to log on to Blackboard with your Active Directory (email) username and password. We will also enrol you on all of the courses and communities you need to see. Further details on this will be available shortly.

3. If you currently log on to Blackboard with some other number or username

For the time being, continue to log on just as you have been doing. However, later this term we will set up a new Blackboard account for you, allowing you to log on to Blackboard with your Active Directory (email) username and password. We will be in touch to arrange enrolling you on all of the courses and communities you need to see. Further details on this will be available shortly.

We are aware of some users who are currently having difficulty logging on. Apologies for this – IT are investigating the problem. If you have any problems at all, please log them with the IT Service Desk.
